Looking through some of my old blog posts‚ i happened upon an article I wrote in February of 2014‚ 5 Things That Drive Geeks Crazy. It sounded like something that I could revisit so I decided to take a look at what AMAZING and INSPIRATIONAL things I had to say at the time. Ewww.
I am not sure if I thought it was funny or if I really felt this way just a little over 2 years ago. Talk about trolling! You can read the original post here to see what I mean.
Anyway‚ as I hoped‚ it did inspire me to write something new. This time‚ I will revisit the list with my new found niceness (I guess) and see if it sticks. Let me know how you think it compares.
I had said that I disliked the little stick figure families in people’s rear windows‚ especially if they are gender swapping. There were plenty of characters to choose from that were in parallel association to your own relationships. However‚ the Star Wars family has drastically changed since 2014. We now have Leia‚ Han and Ben to add to our family. We also now have female Stormtroopers (thank you captain Phasma). Have fun with all the new choices.
Mixing Up The Stars
I swear I had not seen the episode of The Big Bang Theory where Penny warns Amy not to mix up Star Trek with Wars because it would irritate their boyfriends when I wrote that. And they are right‚ it does bother me. They are such different movies that just happen to have similar names. It’s like mistaking Gucci for Pucci‚ if you know fashion you will understand that there is nothing similar about these two brands other than their names.
Costume vs Cosplay
I think this is what I was referring to in my rant about half-assed costumes on adults at Comic Con. I have since come around to see that this is not such a serious infraction. Where a T-shirt with your favorite character. Wear a store bought costume. Go all out and make a detailed character portrayal. Create an original cross-play. Its all good. But if you are going to try really hard to make it “correct”‚ get the major things right or I am out.
Claiming to be a Superfan
I stand by my statement on this one‚ you need to read the book the movie is based on or you are not a superfan. My rule would even extend to video games or comic books. It is ok‚ by the way‚ to see the movie first then start reading the source material.
Fake Geek Girl
I called this questioning my enthusiasm last time but the truth is‚ THIS IS A PROBLEM. It hurts my stomach even thinking about it. Everyone should be able to choose their own level of fandom without feeling judged for it. I fly my freak flag by knitting geeky characters into adorable golf headcovers. No‚ I don’t read all of their comic books weekly. No‚ I don’t go on chat rooms and discuss their latest movies or tv shows. Am I still a fan? Still a geek? Damn right! Superfan? See above 😛
Have you come around on any of these issues? I would love to hear your opinion.
